Ya Gotta Believe!
1973
the second miracle.....
The 1973 pennant chase was the first one that I experienced. I was only 12 and in Junior High. I really remember
coming home from school to watch the Mets in the playoffs that September.
The Mets roster still included many names from the '69 Miracle Mets like Seaver, Koosman, Jones, Garrett, Grote, Harrelson.
and of course Tug McGraw. But many of the key players were relative new comers such as Rusty Staub, Jon Matlack,
George Stone, Don Hahn, John Milner, and Willie Mays.
Jon Matlack, rookie of the year in 1972 followed up by winning 16 games and two more in the playoffs and world series.
Milner a/ka as "The Hammer" provided punch at first base and the outfield.
Cleon Jones endured knee injuries during the season, but his return to health in August coincided with the Mets returning
to winning too!
The Mets acquired Willie Mays from the San Francisco Giants late in the 1972 season. A favorite of original owner
Joan Payson from the days when the Giants played at the polo grounds, Willie was now at the end of his career. Willie
provided leadership and played his heart out for the Mets in the playoff and world series.
Tom Seaver won 19 games in '73 including 10 straight during the drive for the pennant. He wa voted the Cy Young
award for the second time.
And then there was "Mr. Believe" himself, Tug McGraw!
